best road climbs - updaing in Oct 2021

Visited regularly in La Vuelta Espana and Volta Valencia,  Spain's second most mountainous region is home to many fantastic climbs. From Ontinyent you have unparalleled access to the best and more climbs than anywhere else, with many routes simply not viable if staying on the coast.

Some of the many climbs are captured on our guide and maps

The climb that almost makes it to 1000m is one of the most popular with Spanish riders, coming from every direction to tackle it at the weekend.  The gradients are mostly kind and combined with a stop in Fontanars or Beneixama makes for the cornerstone of many routes. The descent to Beneixama is amongst the favourites with our guests; it's free of cars, the recently resurfaced tarmac is perfect and corners flow and join beautifully.

When climbed from Beneixama it is easier, but the descent to Fontanars is more technical with several tight hairpins that are approached at speed. You are rewarded with stunning views of the Tuscany of Valencia, below. From the summit, it is a 22km downhill descent of all the way to Casa Sanz, in Ontinyent, to finish the days riding.

Ontinyent is blessed with fantastic climbs in every direction and Port de Bocairent happens to be one of our favourites in the whole region, for good reason. The views are spectacular and the gradient steady enough to make it the perfect warm-up climb if you have a long day ahead or want to finish the day with a fast and flowing descent back to the Finca.

Port Bocairent also links immediately to Port de Mariola which takes you to nearly 1000m and into the heart of the Serra Mariola National Park.  It also joins Subida Agres which takes you to Muro from where you can ride to the Vall de GalineraBeniarres, Vall d'Ebo, Miserat, Port de Tudons, Gorga and many others.

Aldo de Beneixama.png

Probably the most enjoyable climb you can ride in the region. not too difficult and very, very pretty.

Heading out of the pretty town of Mogente (Moixent in Valencian) this steady climb takes us south from beautiful wine country towards Ontinyent, passing the Bosquet lake and through a spectacular gorge, before rising to give us fantastic views of the Costera plains. Mogente is located close to the nearby 4th BC ruins of la Bastida de Alcusses and the organic wine produced at Bodega Celler de Roure. This is a great climb to include as part of loop from Ontinyent via Fontars del Alforins in either direction, as it also makes an excellent descent.

Starts distance from Denia 91km Calpe 78km Jalon 77km

ElPortillol.png

A classic climb straight out of Ontinyent into the Serra Grossa mountains. The first couple of kilometre's from the town are shallow and steady and the remaining climb hovers around 6% with no steep ramps, making it a great to start for many rides or a fantastic finish to the day. It flows beautifully towards the top where there are stunning views of Ontinyent, Aielo and Xativa in the valleys below. The descent in either direction is also thrilling and beginner-friendly, providing the perfect location to fine-tune technique on open corners, with good visibility and a perfect road surface.

serra mariola waterfall.jpg

One of the best rides you can do in the whole of Spain and a must-do highlight in the Alicante and Valencia region, through a stunning National Park. From Alcoy to Bocairent, there are 22km of stunning roads that climbs, descents, winds and weaves to 901m., before dropping into Bocairent on a thrilling descent which then continues all the way to Ontinyent downhill making for a 20km descent.

Getting here from Denia or Calpe will also require at least 1000-1500m of climbing.

Set in a stunning national park, this a fantastic climb heading from Alcoy into the Font Roja National Park and one of the best in the whole region. The climb has a few steep sections that are tougher than the overall average and the finish kicks up too, but there are no sustained steep ramps which makes for a flowing ascent. There's good shade from the summer sun in parts and the climb provides great views of the Serra Mariola National Park to the north. The summit is over 1000m in elevation and the Sanctuary here is of great historical importance, and often visited by hikers in the summer.

The views from Sanctuary are stunning, from where you can see the peak of Mont Cabrer.

Another one of the fantastic climbs close to Ontinyent, with picture perfect scenery and twisting ribbons of pristine tarmac that take us back onto the Portixol, from where we can either head back up and onto Ontinyent or to Mogente depending on the plan for the day. Rarely frequented from coast, the riding in this part of the region is incredibly picturesque and the gradients comfortable for most of the way from Aielo de Malferit. Our route sees us start the climb before the official signage, commencing from the border of Ontineynt and through Aielo to the summit.

This climb is also perhaps the perfect 20min FTP test ramp!

Unknown to many, this is one of the highest, hardest and best climbs you can do.

An up and back down climb sharing a start with Port de Biar, before turning and snaking its way to 1200m in the Sierra de Fontanella mountains. There are fantastic views from the summit and the climb is popular with riders from Xixona and Alcoy and nearby towns. There are several very steep sections, but for the most part the gradient will feel like a hard alpine climb. We often combine it with rides into the Maigmo park or the Carresqueta, which can make for an epic day of climbing in one of the best places to ride in the region.

Xorret de Cati (Castalla).png

Another of the 1000m inland mountains to the west of the region and perhaps the most famous and most difficult.
It has been used as a decisive summit finish in Professional cycling and a statue to Jose Maria Jiminez commemorates his 1998 victory here. It's set in the beautiful Sierra del Maigmo national park, which provides a beautiful verdant contrast to the arid and rocky terrain to the south and coast in this part of the region. The climb from the Castalla side has sustained sections above 11% and ramps at around 25% as it rises to 1096m making it one of the highest and hardest in the region. The climb from Petrer is more forgiving and affords more time to take in the beautiful views. The lower slopes also provide some decent shade in the hot summer.

The easy longer side of the mountain is still a monster climb by local standards. The descent to Castalla is difficult and technical, but if you descend down to Petrer you can relax in the knowledge that there is no better descent in the Alicante region.

A stunning climb where the official numbers don't do the difficult justice. There are hard ramps near the start, wither several steep sections through twisting hairpins cut through the cliff face. The descent back down to the start is very technical and fast and a joy to confident bike handlers.

The climbing continues on beyond the summit marker, gaining more than another 100m of elevation on the rollojng roads to Navalon in the heart of the Sierra Enguerra. You can link this climb with Purto del Peregri, Cases de Benali, Torre Talada and many of the climbs close to Ontinyent such as Port Bosquet, Alt del Campello, Poritxol and Puerto Paller.

cumbres de sol strava segment.JPG

Is not a climb we get excited about as It's essentially a ride up and through the Cumbres de Sol urbanisation. which means most of it passes houses and parked cars. The views from the very top are however good and a just reward for making it. It is a climb closest to Denia & Calpe.

It's not the hardest of the hard climbs in the area, there are not many other climbs nearby and it means negotiating busy roads around Calpe. There are better options like Xorret de Cati for example, which is steeper, longer and set in a stunning national park with fantastic views and scenery from the bottom to the top and has a richer pro cycling heritage. For those looking for a challenge, we would recommend trying Las Canteras, Ermita Sant Esteve, Alt del Campello, Mirador del Xap,  Serra de Bernia and the Reconco de Bair climbs. All of which are similarly difficult, much prettier and link up with other climbs.
